Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar
Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia and lies between Russia in the north and China in the south. Territorially over four times the size of Germany, the country is the most sparsely populated state in the world with around three million inhabitants. The national territory covers most of the Mongolian Plateau. The landscape is dominated by grassy steppes, with mountains in the north and west, and the Gobi Desert in the south.
The largest city is the capital Ulaanbaatar (English: "red hero"), which is home to more than 40% of the country's population.
The Misheel Kids Foundation (MKF) is dedicated to supporting the maintenance of dental health for children in orphanages and day care centers in Mongolia. With a team of selected local dentists, the foundation treats children free of charge who have no other access to dental care. With their mobile dental surgeries, they treat cavities and carry out complete dental restorations. In addition to the initial examinations, they offer follow-up examinations at regular intervals in Ulaanbaatar. The children are also taught about oral hygiene and healthy eating.
MKF's area of activity includes the capital and selected rural regions of Mongolia. The organisation works with nine orphanages and day care centers and permanently treats around 1’000 boys and girls in these facilities. In order to reach as many other underprivileged children in the capital as possible, MKF also visits various locations in the city's poor neighborhoods (Ger-districts) four times a year with its mobile surgeries.
Twice a year, MKF undertakes longer missions (so-called dental treks) to remote, rural regions to treat children with the mobile dental team who would otherwise have no access to dental care.
Project: Oral-Health-Center / a dental clinic in the middle of the Ger district
As early as 2022, the foundation began looking for a way to provide sustainable dental care for young patients and to have permanent premises available where oral hygiene training can be provided for children and parents. After all, the situation can only be sustainably improved with preventative work. Daily tooth brushing is not firmly established in Mongolian families, but the consumption of sweets and soft drinks is widespread. On the one hand, the aim of the clinic is to provide acute dental care for children and young people in poor neighbourhoods.
On the other hand, MKF is keen to make a contribution to the development of permanent local healthcare, from which the poor sections of the population can also benefit in the long term. An important element of this is awareness-raising and educational work on the connection between nutrition and health, specifically dental health. The clinic is currently under construction and will open in autumn 2025.
