PROJECT-SUPPORT KENYA

2023-132-KEN-SDG 4 / Association Ubele

SDG 4: Quality Education

Association Ubele, Zurich, Switzerland

Country / Place

Kenya, Msambweni

Kenya is a country in East Africa. It borders South Sudan to the northwest, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the northeast, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, and the Indian Ocean to the southeast. The capital and largest city is Nairobi.

Msambweni is a constituency in Kwale County in southern Kenya. It is located on the Indian Ocean between the town of Ukunda and the border with Tanzania.

General

The Swiss non-profit organisation Ubele supports the "Nice View" children's village in Msambweni. The orphans and street children are given a home and an education, thereby receiving a new perspective on life. The Kishuahili word "Ubele" also means view / perspective.

The children's village started in the year 2000 with the first eight orphans. Since then, the youth welfare office has repeatedly sent children in need to "Nice View". Around 50 girls and boys now live in the children's village.

In addition to the children's village, the project includes the "Nice View Gratitude Academy" school, a small clinic with European standards, as well as a farm and a carpentry workshop. The various sub-projects create around 80 jobs for the local population.

Beneficiaries

The organisation is committed to ensuring that the children have a chance of a better future. They receive a loving upbringing, security, and a balanced diet. In addition, the children enjoy a good and solid basic education from kindergarten to vocational training.

The children's village is in close contact with the local population. In various projects, young people from the neighbourhood receive vocational training and thus prospects for the future. The "Nice View Health Centre" provides basic medical care not only for the children, but also for the general public.

Education: "Nice View Gratitude Academy"

The "Nice View Gratitude Academy" follows the Kenyan education plan and aims to achieve a high level of education. In addition to subjects such as English, maths, science, Kisuahili, social studies, religious education, communication, information technology, and sport, the school management attaches great importance to promoting the various talents of the children in a targeted manner.

With the introduction of the new school system on January 1, 2023, the "Nice View Gratitude Academy" has been offering the junior secondary school level from the seventh to ninth grade in addition to kindergarten and primary school. As additional subjects such as physics and chemistry have to be taught at this level, the school was expanded with additional classrooms (including a laboratory).

With the introduction of the new school system, the management of the children's village also decided to homeschool the "Nice View children" who were still attending secondary school in a boarding school under the old system.
