Nepal, Gorkha District (northwest of Kathmandu)
Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia. It borders China to the north and India to the east, south and west. A republic was proclaimed in the former kingdom in May 2008. The country has about 30 million inhabitants and is ethnically and culturally a mosaic of minorities. The capital Kathmandu is the seat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. With about one million inhabitants in the urban area and a good 1.4 million in the metropolitan area, it is the largest city in the country.
The Gorkha District is an area that covers 3’610 km² and has a low population density of 275’000 inhabitants. The area of operation lies at the foot of Manaslu, the eighth tallest mountain in the world at 8’156 metres.
The Association Sambhav Nepal supports people in the areas of education, health, job opportunities, and provides emergency aid. The aim is to improve their living conditions and their self-determination. The long-term development goals are based on existing resources and cultural conditions. The association knows the situation and the needs of the local population and coordinates its activities with politicians and authorities.
The projects are established where they are needed. Sambhav Nepal is in close contact with the inhabitants of the mountain villages and implements what they really need. Many Gorkha's live as self-sufficient in a pristine way and in close connection to nature. The village communities are numerous, and many families live far away from the villages in the middle of nature.
Project 2022/2023: "Taking care - Giving warmth"
As part of the project, tracksuits, school backpacks, exercise books, shirts, woolly hats, and shoes for the pupils of remote schools in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas are distributed. The reach of this project is immense, because receiving a tracksuit means an indescribable amount to a child in Nepal. In addition, they only receive one school uniform, which they do not want to play in to prevent damaging it or getting it dirty. The tracksuit gives them freedom to play in, to change into, for leisure time, and in winter for much-needed warmth (it then serves as a second layer).
They do not have a school backpack; hence the children carry the exercise books to school in their hands. Families have to buy exercise books themselves, which is not possible for many, making it impossible for some girls and boys to attend school.

Project 2024: Shree Darbar secondary school in ArughatThe main reason for the support is to enable pupils to continue learning after the 10th grade. Many schools in the mountain villages stop after the 10th grade, making it impossible for students to graduate from a regular school. Children from three primary schools (Bhairabi, Gyanbhumi and Balodaya) go to Arughat for the official graduation. The Shree Darbar secondary school there, and its role in this densely populated mountain area, is very important for all current and future students.
The construction project involves building an additional two-storey school building. Three classrooms and a room for a canteen will be located on the ground floor. The upper floor will house the large multi-purpose hall, which can be used for all kinds of school and extracurricular activities.
