SUPPORT-PROJECT MONGOLIA

2022-27-MNG-SDG 3 / Support association Misheel Kids

SDG 3: Good health and well-being

Support Association Misheel Kids: Healthy Children's Teeth Mongolia, Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Country / Place

Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar

Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia, situated between Russia in the north and China in the south. Its territory covers most of the Mongolian Plateau. Territorially almost four and a half times the size of Germany, the country is the most sparsely populated state in the world with around three million inhabitants. The largest city is the capital Ulaanbaatar (English "red hero"), where more than 40% of the country's population lives.

General

The Misheel Kids Foundation (MKF) is dedicated to supporting the maintenance of dental health for underprivileged children in orphanages and daycare centres in Mongolia. The children treated by MKF do not have access to dental care or instruction in oral hygiene and nutrition through other means. Malnutrition, negligence by overburdened parents and homelessness are just some of the reasons for the bleak nutritional and dental condition of thousands of children in Mongolia.

Beneficiaries

MKF currently works with eight orphanages and day care centres in Ulaanbaatar, treating almost 1,000 children. In addition, MKF undertakes mobile assignments, so-called dental treks, to rural regions. The dental treks enable them to reach remote areas of Mongolia and provide dental care to people that do not have access to oral hygiene instruction and dental treatment through other means.

Project-support

The aim of the project is to provide dental care for disadvantaged children in Mongolia; this includes the treatment of cavities up to complete dental restorations by selected local dentists. In addition to the initial examinations, follow-up examinations are conducted at regular intervals, during which the children are also taught oral hygiene and healthy nutrition.

After focusing on the treatment of children in orphanages and day care centres in the past years, the project aims to reach a considerable number of children in the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar by 2024. For this purpose, temporary clinics will be established in those districts where needy children live.
